Rather than sharing a typical slide presentation, I walked the class through a selection of book cover designs in my portfolio. Through the talk, I highlighted a variety of conceptual strategies, design methods, and image-making techniques. The title of my talk was “Diasporican: Design Perspectives on Identity and Culture”. Additionally, I did a workshop with students in Professor Maurizio Masi’s Publication Design class and Professor Jenny Kowalski’s Graphic Design Intermediate Studio class.&nbsp;Event description: In this talk, Puerto Rican designer and educator Jason Alejandro will share his insights into his hybrid practice as a graphic design educator and researcher. Jason’s experience as a book designer underpins his approach to developing creative work focusing on Puerto Rico’s history, language, and identity. In addition, he will provide some recent research into the life and work of famed Puerto Rican artist and designer Lorenzo Homar. I prepared a short video presentation about Puerto Rico that focused on the Jones Act and the history of label design for the Don Q rum brand. Students in the class were tasked with redesigning the packaging for Don Q with a focus on positive social impact. I then joined the class at the end of the semester to share some recent research about Puerto Rican graphic design Lorenzo Homar and to critique and award the student work. My cover for La Chancla:&nbsp;How a Symbol of Motherhood Inspired a Protest Movement&nbsp;explores the cultural semiotics of ‘la chancla’ (sandal), a symbol of discipline and care in many Latinx households, and its transformation into an emblem of resistance. This title weaves personal stories with history and activism to reveal how this object united communities to fight for justice, equity, and social change. A powerful tribute to the strength of mothers everywhere and the impact of grassroots movements.From the organizers:“Bookstand 2125 is a collaborative design fiction project that invites artists and designers to imagine and create books from the year 2125. In this speculative future, knowledge and creativity flourish within systems centered on care, nurturing, and collective well-being rather than competition and scarcity.
